BBQ Sauce Competition

Official Rules & Regulations
Think you make the best BBQ sauce around? Put your recipe to the test at the 132nd Vancouver Island Exhibition!

The VIEx BBQ Sauce Competition is open to everyone, from
backyard BBQ enthusiasts to seasoned sauce makers.

Entry Requirements
1. The competition is open to everyone.
2. Each entry must be a prepared, ready-to-serve BBQ sauce. There will be no cooking or preparation required on-site.
3. BBQ sauce must be the entrant’s own recipe. Commercially bottled or store-bought sauces may not be entered as an original recipe.
4. Each entrant must provide enough sauce for the judging panel to sample. We
recommend submitting a minimum of 500 mL (approximately 2 cups).
5. Sauce must be submitted in a clean, sealed, food-safe container.
6. Each entry must include:
o Entrant’s name
o Phone number and/or email address
o Name of the BBQ sauce, if applicable
o A complete list of ingredients, including any common allergens
7. Entrants are responsible for ensuring their sauce has been prepared and stored using
safe food-handling practices.
8. No entry fee for first year

Entry Drop-Off
All BBQ sauce entries must be dropped off:
Thursday, September 24, 2026
10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Centennial Building – Beban Park
Entries must be received during the designated drop-off period to be eligible for judging.

Judging
All entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges.
Sauces will be judged on:
 Taste & Overall Flavour – balance, seasoning and overall appeal
 Texture & Consistency – appropriate thickness and mouthfeel
 Aroma – appealing and complementary to the flavour
 Originality – creativity and uniqueness of the sauce

 BBQ Appeal – how well the sauce would complement BBQ meats and foods
 Overall Impression – the sauce the judges would most want to use again
Judging decisions are final.

Winner
One sauce will be selected as the VIEx BBQ Sauce Competition Winner.
The winning sauce will receive special recognition at the Vancouver Island Exhibition and will
have the exciting opportunity to have their winning sauce featured on The Landlubber Pub’s
menu!
Details regarding the menu feature, preparation and use of the winning recipe will be
coordinated with the winner and The Landlubber Pub following the competition.

Important Information
 Entries containing undeclared allergens may be disqualified.
 VIEx reserves the right to refuse any entry that appears unsafe, improperly stored or
unsuitable for judging.
 Submitted sauce will not be returned.
 Entrants grant VIEx permission to use their name, sauce name and photographs taken
in connection with the competition for promotional purposes.
 Entry into the competition constitutes acceptance of these rules and the decisions of the
judging panel.
 VIEx reserves the right to amend competition details if required.
