The VIEX is a full family event that provides fun, education and entertainment for all ages. It has been Nanaimo’s single largest premier event for the past 123 years. One of our mandates is to help the entire community grow by bringing everyone together, hence the idea for the quilt. The VIEX was awarded a grant through the Canadian Heritage-Canada 150 fund. This grant included 3 separate projects: “A Step Back In time” display, during the VIEX of artifacts that were used in the home over the past 150 years by the Mid-Island Tractor Club; a “Friendship Building” quilt where mainly children, attending the fair drew what the past 150 years meant to them, which will be made into a small quilt and the “Reconciliation Quilt Project”. The Reconciliation Quilt is a project the VIEX has entered into with 2 main partners which are: the Nanaimo Aboriginal Centre and the Mid-Island Metis Nation. The Quilt will feature the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action. This will be a collaboration of both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal participants each designing a 12″x12″ square that corresponds to one of the 94 calls to action. We have the wisdom and leadership of Elder, Sally Williams guiding this project. We have planned 4 gatherings at Tsawalk Learning Centre, #1-1559 Estevan Rd., Nanaimo. The project launch will take place on Saturday, October 28th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. with further gatherings on Thursday, November 2nd from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Saturday, November 4th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. and Thursday, November 9th from […]
