Brian is the newly elected President of the VIEx for 2018 and as a member of the Executive is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the planning process. He is also the Director of Security and is responsible for all aspects of safety to ensure that the fair is a safe place for all its patrons. He is also our liaison with the police in dealing with planning and emergency preparedness.
Brian has been with the VIEx for 5 years with one year as Director of Grounds and four years as Director of Security. He also looks after the procurement of tents which local businesses donate and other related tasks. Karen is the Vice-President of the Vancouver Island Exhibition. She has been involved with the VIEx for 23 years. Starting out as an exhibitor with her emus, Karen joined the Board and has held the positions of Livestock Director, past President, Vice-President and Secretary. In addition to her current roles, she is also the chairperson of the VIEx’s 52 bed Community Garden and the Vice President of the BC Fairs Provincial Association.
Karen was born in Edmonton, raised in Nanaimo and lives in Lantzville. She has been married for 35 years, has 5 children and 8 grandchildren, which keep her very busy. Karen believes strongly in the impact and benefits that fairs contribute to all communities. As Nanaimo is a large urban area with very few farms left, the VIEx is needed to reinforce tradition and teach people where their food comes from. You can contact Karen at email@example.com
Born and raised in Nanaimo, Margaret has been a Director of the VIEx since 2009, and is the Secretary of the Board. Her passion for arts and crafts has made her an influential Director of the Home Arts section of VIEx. She loves showcasing the talent and many groups of the crafting community of Nanaimo. Stephen Kass considers himself a long time Vancouver Islander. Having lived in the Nanaimo for over 30 years, he has raised his family, operated his retail Halloween and haunted house businesses, and has been a proud volunteer in the community.
In 2004, Stephen became part of the VIEx family. Elected as President for 4 years and subsequently holding the Treasurer position for the last 9 years, Stephen has seen many changes to the City and the VIEx. As a lifetime VIEx member, Stephen looks forward to the ongoing development and completion of the new Agricultural Centre at Beban Park in the upcoming years. Contessa Abbott has been involved with the Alberta music and festival industry over 10 years. She started by organizing workshops and facilitating conferences while taking her Social Work Bachelor’s Degree, and raising her four children. She proudly has influenced many community development and grassroots projects, combining her love of music and helping others together. Over the years she was able to work with many notable artists and organizations in the fashion, acting, music, and humanitarian fields.
Contessa and her children have recently made Nanaimo their new home and she continues to be involved with the entertainment and community development industries both in Alberta and BC. Being a part of VIEX is a family affair for her and her children. They are excited to continue growing the kids zone as well as including more youth interests into the area. Tricia Barnes is a long time community volunteer. She is a former teacher with a strong background in leadership, facilitating and organizing. Her involvement in a variety of diverse cultural and community activities has equipped her with a spectrum of experiences for Director with the VIEx.
She has stage managed shows with local theatre groups. Tricia see the VIEx as a “Festival of Passions”. She is delighted to have joined the team for this year and presently is selecting performers from our community to entertain you all. You can contact Tricia at email@example.com
Christina was born and raised in Nanaimo and has fond memories of attending the VIEx as a child. She worked in the health care field for several years before deciding to enter into the Tourism Management degree program at VIU, and worked for the VIEx as their summer student two years in a row.
As the former Chair of the Recreation & Tourism Association at VIU, Christina has gained experience in leadership and event programming, and hopes to further her knowledge in both as the Director of the Commercial Expo. She believes that the VIEx is an important part of Nanaimo’s past, present and future, and hopes to further the goals of the fair while serviing her community in the process. Lynn is currently the Vancouver Island Exhibition’s Director of Volunteers. She has been involved with the VIEX since 2008 and previously held the positions of Director of Security and President. Lynn was born in Nova Scotia and has lived and raised her family in Nanaimo since 1994. Lynn recently retired and decided to rejoin the team at the Exhibition.
As Director of Volunteers, she believes volunteers are a vital part of the fair and without the dedication of volunteers we would not be able to provide this fair to our community. “Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. Dynamic, sassy, and efficient, Shirley has been a part of the VIEx team for 10 years, and a board member for 6 of those years. Currently the Director of Hospitality and Bingo, she has had the opportunity to help in many of the areas of VIEx. Each year, to her, is an opportunity to meet new people and enjoy the comradery of the members. Additionally, Shirley has been dedicated to the Nanaimo community through her many activities with the Nanaimo Child Development Centre, Variety the Children’s Charity, her local church and 35 years as part of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
